Day 9: news pitching process, news design and stand-up

Day 9: continued discussion of news pitching process + news design

Pae proposes to cover news on fighting among football fans. Horea suggests, the story should include "Heysel stadium" disaster in England in 1985

- football
- Loy Kratong
For: festival news, the newsroom can motivate many news desk to help investigate from different angles, such as
#environmental impact of Loy Kratong, where was the worst place of rubbish after Loy Kratong: Sukothai after the Loy Kratong. Check the extreme back and see where can be the case study.
#innovation: Loy Kratong innovation stories

stringers:
We can think of "creating themes", because we don't have big news like junta, disaster everyday.
Ex: metropolistv.nl  : a YouTube TV which editor , which has correspondents around the world. The newsroom will encourage correspondents around the world to pitch stories.

This is the idea to help in motivate correspondents to pitch stories
Look at how they think of "creative ideas" and ask correspondents to pitch stories, such as PIG

To ask for stories: describe the team and in the last paragraph to tell what they really want for
Editors must create our own ideas of the stories and email stringers or correspondents to get themed stories.

Ex: for Loy Kratong stories; create email to correspondents.
Ex: Prayuth visits Cambodia: there are Cambodians in Thailand, we can think of Cambodians who are doing extremely good things in Thailand, Cambodians who save lives for Thai people.
Ex: football fans: we can ask for extremely positive, amicable football fans or solution among two ultra fans.

The problem is our newsroom is we don't really commission with stringers. We should tell them directly what we want and we would like them to think.

So far, we just wait for things to happen, or wait for invitation, we should think "actively" to generate more content, active things. We don't have to wait foe editors or management level, we have to do it from our initiatives.

Hivos International: social innovation award, provides media innovation platform and the grants for media innovation.

Horea suggests we need to "go local."

Next: To develop a story
- the direction should be clear so you will not have problem with post production.
- develop a "wish list" (shopping list)

The wish list : we should have a wish list before we do a story
Ex: reporter and stringer may need it.
Remember: no magic wand to do a good story last minute.

What is a wish list for news report?
1. The story angle: try to choose angle which is closer to your audience. The closer the more they want to watch it.
: sum up story angle in one sentence, it will enable you to focus, it should not be too general
ขึ้นอยู่กับมุมมอง

2. The story sides
Ex: story of football fans fighting can be:
Ultra 1
Ultra 2
Manager 1
Manager 2
Football police
Security

Note: the more sides we have, the better story it will be.
A good story should have at least three sides. ( 3 sides)
(In SEA negotiates for maximum condition first, then it can be lowered two sides)

Sound bites: how often you want to have sound bites, but you cannot find it.
The reason is, the reporter has not been briefed what to get from sound bite.

3. The sound bites (SOT)
Part of interview, sound bites should reflect feelings and opinion.
Narrative is fact, sound bite reflects feeling and opinion.
Sound bites should reflect every side of the story.
Remember: people want to hear it from the horses'mouths
Interview can be on camera, but can be just getting information. Information which needs for narration. Sound bites is part of interview. Ex: how do you feel about what had happened? Make sure to record  good sound bites. Politicians know how to give good sound bites, they are trained to do it.

4. Pictures
Sequences
Evidence
Graphic
Library

Talk to people with different sides.
Ex: human examples, the more we have, the easier to build a story because they are characters. The more we have, it is easier to tell stories because we have many characters to say it. But, remember human examples are not the whole story, they are parts of the story. To have human examples will help a lot, you will have more pictures and audience can say, this could be me.

Ex: religions always develop small stories to engage with people and get attention from people.

The stand-up:
- to show reporter is on site to tell stories
- increase conviction and credibility
- triangulation
- to demonstrate complicated facts which cannot be shown through pictures
- to emphasize and figures
- to add other sides of stories when reporters cannot get interviewer and to say that website or the stance of that person is.....
- average 30 sec
- sign off with the name, tv station and location

Assignment: to try calling a call center to see how long it will take before an operator will pick up the phone.

Here is my practice of filming and editing:
