The second day of "News Production 101" with Horea Salajan
The beginning of today's class is to understand basic framing and composition of a picture. This is basic understanding of how to film. To understand the composition and takes it well will help in making the frame looks professional.
Golden Rules of taking picture:
- Rule of Thirds: always leave room for 1/3, be careful, attention is not necessarily on the centre of the screen. The centre of attention should not be in the middle because the shot will not look natural.
( exception: stand up shot and anchor in the studio has to be in the middle)
- nose room: leave the side for 2/3 from the nose of a subject in the frame
- head room: leave 1/3 from the eye of the subject
- walking room: leave 2/3 space for subject to walk
- triangulation: presenter and stand up shot look straight into the camera
- diagonal lines: avoid parallel line with the screen, your pic will look flat, not natural
Type of shots:
Key of TV news: VDO with only some narration
As a a journalist we need to tell stories by pictures.
Name of shots:
- very long shot
- long shot
- medium long shot
- medium shot
- medium close up
- close up
- big close up
shots by camera moves
- pan left and right
- tilt up and down
- track in and out
- lifting/ elevate shot
- crane up and down
- depress shot
Name the shot by people in the shot
- two shot
- three shot
- four shot
Be careful: never zoom while filming
Then, it is the exercise of filming with 20 shots of different camera angles,
Eye level
High level
Low level
Bird's eye view
Ant's eye view
The exercise tells me the eyes of a cameraman need to think in details the shot to take, the continuation of the story, light and angles. These are in details for a good story telling and we can never forget the sound which is amount to 50 per cent of filming.
The editing is a challenge for a novice like me, I really need more practice with Filmicpro and iMovie.
All in all, this is the beginning of one-man/woman crew. Keep going for us all!
The below is my first exercise. Thanks for Peng for being my subject in this first exercise.
